Parrot in the Park

Parrot in the Park
Mixed Media on 5"x7" watercolor paper

I have painted Romeo from Forsyth Park in Savannah a few times. I was looking for inspiration for a warm up painting and he flew by in my mind. Such a beautiful fella.

As an aside I revised the above painting. I do that a lot. I will look at a work and think... "It can look better." Sometimes there is succeeds and sometimes it is a total flop. And sometimes, like this time... I really don't know.

Sittin' on the Deck of the Pond

Sittin' on the Deck of the Pond
Acrylics on 4"x4" stretched canvas

The Arboretum Shopping Center in Charlotte features a duck pond where the Plein Air Buds have painted a few times. These ducks posed for me sitting on the deck of the pond... wastin' time.

Madison

Madison
Acrylics 10"x10" stretched canvas

Madison was commissioned to me by the owner of Monkey, Kylie. Madison's owner has cancer and Kylie wanted to cheer up her friend with a painting of her dog. I couldn't say no. This painting is covered in prayers. Dog owners have a very special place in heaven. Big hearts! I hope this brings cheer to Madison's sweet owner.

Doodle Rose

Doodle Rose
Mixed Media on watercolor paper 5"x7"

I am in training for a paint out in Southport, NC. I am going to try to paint 10 small mixed-media works in one day from 9 AM- 3 PM. At 4 PM I hope to sell a few for $25-$30. That would cover the cost of the trip and a meal. I am fairly happy with this one. Southport is a seaside town but maybe I can find a rose or two for a warm-up. All works have to be painted on site and the papers are stamped before the painting begins. This is my first such paint out. Very excited.

Cup of Flower

Cup of Flower
6"x6" on paper adhered to stretched canvas
Mixed Media

Loved doing this piece! So many layers of different media. It all started with a rose from my garden placed in a cup. I got some paper and watercolors and painted it. I then grabbed a pen and drew in lines. Then I pulled out my acrylic paints to enhance the work here and there.. well, just about everywhere. What else? Crayons! Highlights were added using Caran d'Ache artist crayons... love 'em. The work was adhered to the canvas with acrylic medium. 3 layers of glossy varnish complete it. So much fun working in layers!

Journal Entry: Birdhouse at Squirrel Lake Park

Art Journal Entry: Birdhouse at Squirrel Lake Park
Ink, watercolors and Caron d'Ache crayons

It's been a while since I've done anything with journaling. It gets me in that playful throw-around-the-paint mood. I quickly sketch a scene with pencil. The pencil layout gives me confidence to ink out the scene. Watercolor is transparent and loose. The crayons are opaque and can fill in those spots that bother me. I just keep throwing around those mediums until I am happy. I need to journal more often. Fun.
